EP REVIEW: CARRÉ – MELTDOWN

Meltdown by Carré is an EP of three tracks and two remixes that draws on deep dub vibes with subterranean bass that vibrates you at a cellular level. Carré is a producer, DJ and owner of the LA-based label Fast At Work now working in London with a short hop to Dublin’s Woozy; the label that has released this EP.

The title track blooms like a dub flower growing, shrinking and pulsing over the top of drum patterns that bring muted kicks and fizzing hi-hats. The synthesised sounds seem to be breathing as if the track is coming to life and getting its first taste of oxygen. The ‘Meltdown’ remix is a sped-up version of the original with a crisp drumbeat that keeps all the squelching electronics in line as ghostly arcade sounds drift in and out.

‘Crawler’ and ‘Season Seven’ have the precision of a Kruder & Dorfmeister cut with every element knowing exactly where it needs to be. The tsk-tsk hi-hat, door-knock feel of the kick drum and whirling percussion act as a counterpoint to the choppy vocal samples.

Meltdown is a set of tracks that has an effortless and laidback feel. The dazzling syncopation and propulsive rhythms could be used by a ballet company as easily as a cutting-edge modern dance troupe. It’s a fluid world of colour and warmth that I can happily submerge myself in time and again.
