A few months back Gwenno played a series of solo shows with signings to promote her new album Utopia, and I was lucky enough to be part of a packed house at Rough Trade in Bristol. In my recent review of Utopia I said “She could spellbind a folk club if the songs were stripped back to just piano and voice, or she could dazzle a mainstage audience at Glastonbury with a full band line-up and Vegas-bright lighting.” Well, at Rough Trade that night the first part of that statement was put to the test as Gwenno took to the stage with nothing but an electric piano, her voice, and enough charm to ensure every tree in the area was birdless. Her voice in any language is perfection, and her charm, wit and humour held the audience in thrall from the first to last song.
