Having discovered Manchester’s self-proclaimed “Northern Sugababes” at Loud Women Fest back in September, and instantly falling in love with them — I was excited to catch Loose Articles again, this time headlining their own Christmas Party. I’m not much of a Christmas person, so you won’t usually find me at a festive gig, but when it involves a band this good, I’ll happily make an exception.
Luckily for me, the festive element was delightfully minimal: just a few strands of red tinsel wrapped around the band. After all, they were the real gift that night, lighting up a cold December Saturday at the Sebright Arms.
Loose Articles’ entire repertoire is made to make you move, raucous, witty punk anthems built for shouting along and dancing like you don’t care. Their music is gloriously chaotic in the best way, with fuzzy guitars, driving rhythms and that irresistible raw Manchester edge. They blend biting social commentary with tongue-in-cheek humour, covering everything from feminist frustrations to the absurdities of everyday life.
There’s “Mr Manager”, a punk punch in the face of awful bosses everywhere, and “Guitars, Cars, Knickers and Bras”, full of sarcastic feminist bite that turns irritation into a dancefloor anthem. On stage, the band’s personality shines through just as brightly as the music — their dry humour, cheeky asides, and easy sense of camaraderie instantly set the tone for a proper party. They don’t just perform at you; they pull you into their world.
The crowd loved it. The Sebright Arms became a sweaty, joyous playground — a glorious mix of dancing, headbanging, bouncing, and laughing. At one point the band pulled the microphone wire into the audience to start an impromptu limbo competition, which tells you everything you need to know about the atmosphere. Loose Articles don’t just play a gig; they create a punk party where everyone feels like a member of the gang.
Their live sound is loud, fuzzy, and wonderfully unrestrained — chaotic in a way that feels cathartic and communal. It’s the kind of punk that reminds you why live music matters: it’s messy, human, hilarious, and full of heart.
Loose Articles are quickly becoming one of the most joyful, rebellious, and fun bands on the UK punk scene. If this was a Christmas party, it was one that swapped cheesy jumpers and bad Secret Santas for distortion, sarcasm, and feminist fury — and honestly, that’s my kind of festive cheer.
