Experimental outfit Xiu Xiu brought their latest live show to Manchester’s Gorilla on the 2nd of February, in the fittingly industrial setting of a railway arch. After the previous success of their Twin Peaks tour, and just over a year since the passing of David Lynch, the band presented their audio-visual ode to his nightmarish 1977 masterpiece Eraserhead. A plethora of weird and wonderful instruments and devices saw use in the set, culminating with the smashing of glass in a dustbin. A night as discomforting and obliquely humorous as you’d expect.
Opening for the evening was Manchester-based project Burn Into Sleep, mesmerising the audience with a dark and compelling soundscape, accompanied by hypnotically delivered spoken-word.
Photographer Mat Coffey (AKA Der Fotoautomat) was present to witness and document the monochromatic fever dream.
