It’s been a great day for debut album releases (see also my Congratulations review), and Kill The Cop Inside Your Head by YAKKIE is another powerful first record that’s just dropped into our laps. I first saw YAKKIE live at Loud Women Fest back in 2023, which was actually their very first show, and they completely blew me away with their passionate, powerful modern riot grrrl performance. So I was super psyched to finally hear the album.
YAKKIE are a London-based DIY punk supergroup made up of members from bands like Dream Nails, Petrol Girls, Personal Best, Colour Me Wednesday, and more. With that kind of pedigree, it’s no surprise that the record feels both politically charged and musically tight, balancing fury with moments of vulnerability.
The album kicks off with the title track and single “Kill The Cop Inside Your Head,” which sets the tone immediately with a shouty punk chorus, ferocious guitars, and snarling, bittersweet vocals. It’s a rallying cry against self-defeat and internalised oppression, inspired by the ideas of Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal. The message is clear from the first track: this album isn’t just about anger, it’s about reclaiming your power.
Next up, “Criticize Me” gives you a false sense of security, starting out like a dreamy pop-punk track before speeding up and revealing its sharper edges. It still carries a strong ’90s feel, like something that wouldn’t be out of place on the soundtrack to an indie teen film. “He Sleeps Alone” follows in a similar vein, with sweet, almost delicate vocals sitting over a blend of punk and grunge textures.
“Lean Out” is my personal favourite. It kicks straight in with dark, dirty guitars and angry feminist energy. With the line “Who cares for women? Other women,” shout-sung over pounding instrumentation, it basically contains nearly all my favourite things in music in one song.
Across the album, there’s a constant push and pull between melody and aggression. One moment you’re getting chant-along slogans and crushing riffs, the next there’s a softer, more emotive section that shows another side of the band. That balance makes the record feel more dynamic and human, rather than just a wall of noise.
Part of what gives the album its raw power is the way it was recorded. The whole thing was laid down live to reel-to-reel tape at Middle Farm Studios in just four days, with every track recorded in a single take and no digital tricks. You can really feel that immediacy in the sound—it’s rough, real, and full of urgency.
Kill The Cop Inside Your Head is an album made for this political moment: angry, motivating, and deeply human at the same time. It feels like both a punch in the face and a hug from a friend who’s telling you to get up and fight. For a debut record, it’s impressively confident, and if this is where YAKKIE are starting from, I can’t wait to see where they go next.
