Reifier, the solo project of composer, producer, engineer and vocalist Daniela Mandoki, who splits her time between Mexico City and London, released her debut EP The Unfolding earlier in February. The six tracks flit between waking and dreaming, creating electronic worlds to explore themes of identity and transformation.
“This project became a steadfast companion through many significant moments in my life,” Mandoki explains. “A constant thread throughout my work is the oneiric world—I am deeply fascinated by the secret life of dreams and the many lives we live within them.”
It blends traditional instrumentation – cello, piano, gochipand with electronic textures, experimenting with sound recording along the way – underwater gurgles, ripping paper and striking matches all find their way into the mix, creating an otherworldly, immersive experience.
“The EP moves from highly surreal pieces to more intimate moments, including the exploration of who I truly am—both in the world, as a queer person, and in the nocturnal selves I inhabit through my dreams.”

es la primera canción del álbum, aunque fue la última en crearse. Lo que más me gusta de esta canción es que pude colaborar con la gran cellista Belén Ruíz, quien creó texturas sonoras y armonías increíbles para la segunda parte del tema.
Otro elemento especial de la rola es que el solo del puente lo toqué usando un instrumento de la India llamado Gochipand, que posteriormente procesé con efectos hasta llegar a un sonido único y muy especial.

‘Invertia’ is the first track on the album, even though it was the last one to be created. What I love most about this song is the opportunity to collaborate with the wonderful cellist Belén Ruíz, who created incredible sonic textures and harmonies for the second part of the track.
Another special element is the bridge solo, which I played using an Indian instrument called the Gochipand, later processed with effects to achieve a unique and distinctive sound.

“Glimmer” es una canción que habla de lo dañino que puede ser estar en una relación o en un entorno tóxico, donde no podemos ser nosotrxs mismxs, y de cómo muchas veces pensamos que, por estar rodeadxs de gente, estamos más segurxs, cuando no siempre es así. La canción comienza con muy pocos elementos, reflejando cómo los estímulos externos se apagan y cómo aquello que antes nos daba más miedo —el silencio y estar a solas— empieza a sentirse, por primera vez, como un lugar seguro.
En la segunda parte de la canción se van integrando cada vez más elementos, ya que esta soledad evoluciona hacia un mundo interno completo, en el cual puedo encontrar todos los sonidos que estaba buscando afuera. De hecho, la primera y la segunda parte de la canción fueron creadas con meses de diferencia. Con el tiempo, entendí que necesitaba esa distancia y estar en un momento distinto para poder llegar a la conclusión de “Glimmer.”

‘Glimmer’ is a song about how damaging it can be to be in a toxic relationship or environment where we are unable to be ourselves, and how we often believe that being surrounded by people makes us safer, when that isn’t always true. The song begins with very few elements, reflecting how external stimuli fade away and how what once frightened us most—silence and being alone—begins to feel, for the first time, like a safe place.
In the second part of the song, more and more elements are gradually introduced, as this solitude evolves into a complete inner world where I can find all the sounds I had been searching for outside. In fact, the first and second parts of the song were created months apart. Over time, I came to understand that I needed that distance and to be in a different emotional moment in order to arrive at the conclusion of ‘Glimmer.’

“The Unfolding” fue la primera canción de mi material como Reifier en ser terminada. La composición partió de una grabación hecha debajo del agua que, combinada con distintos efectos, dio vida a las texturas sonoras del inicio de la canción y se convirtió en el punto de partida para su desarrollo. Es una canción muy personal, ya que habla de mi proceso al darme cuenta de que me gustaban las mujeres y de cómo aceptarlo me permitió soltar muchos miedos y prejuicios, hasta sentirme cómoda en mi propia piel.
Para el video, tenía claro que quería hacer una oda a las mujeres y a lo increíbles que son, con todas sus diferencias y la belleza única de cada una. Fue entonces cuando decidí colaborar con la artista mexicana Soledad Violeta, sabiendo que su sensibilidad y su visión eran justo lo que el video y la portada de la canción necesitaban. El video se creó en stop motion: Violeta imprimió cada una de las fotografías y, cuadro por cuadro, fue construyendo la historia, logrando lo que yo buscaba: que el espectador se sumergiera en mi proceso de autodescubrimiento y, en el camino, se maravillara de lo increíbles que son las mujeres.

‘The Unfolding’ was the first song from my work as Reifier to be completed. The composition began with an underwater recording which, combined with different effects, brought to life the sound textures at the beginning of the song and became the starting point for its development. This is a very personal track, as it speaks about my process of realizing I was attracted to women and how accepting that allowed me to let go of many fears and prejudices, finally feeling comfortable in my own skin.
For the video, I knew I wanted to create an ode to women and to how incredible they are, with all their differences and each one’s unique beauty. That’s when I decided to collaborate with Mexican artist Soledad Violeta, knowing that her sensitivity and vision were exactly what the video and the song’s cover needed. The video was created using stop motion: Violeta printed each photograph and, frame by frame, built the story, achieving what I was looking for—for the viewer to immerse themselves in my journey toward self-discovery and, along the way, marvel at how incredible women are.

The Flame es la canción más enérgica del álbum. Comenzó en 2023 como una pieza de transición que representaba el fuego para el concierto multidisciplinario Fragmentary. En 2025, después de leer una novela de terror sobre un monstruo que persigue a una mujer, surgió la inspiración para terminarla uniendo estas dos ideas: el monstruo que te sigue—ya sea la ansiedad o aquello que te persigue—y cómo quema todo a su paso.
Parte de la percusión fue creada a partir de sonidos de cerillos y fuego real, generando una atmósfera que hace que el oyente se sienta rodeado de calor.

‘The Flame’ is the most upbeat track on the album. The song began in 2023 as a transitional piece representing fire for the multidisciplinary concert Fragmentary. In 2025, after reading a horror novel about a monster hunting a woman, I was inspired to complete the track by merging these two ideas: the monster that follows you—whether anxiety or whatever pursues you—and how it burns everything in its path.
Part of the percussion was created using matches and real fire, generating an atmosphere that makes the listener feel surrounded by heat.

“Dreamscape” fue el primer sencillo que lancé bajo mi proyecto Reifier. Tal como su nombre lo sugiere, esta canción es un viaje al mundo de los sueños. La letra habla de la travesía de la narradora mientras camina debajo del mar, donde el mundo real y el mundo onírico se van fusionando poco a poco en uno solo.
“Dreamscape” nació a partir de una improvisación, y el lead principal de la canción fue creado a partir de un sample de piano de cola. Al ser procesado con distintos efectos, se generó un timbre único. Debido a que la improvisación fue realizada sin metrónomo, fue difícil encontrar el compás de la canción, ya que no quería que se perdiera su carácter espontáneo y extraño; por ello, decidí contarlo en 11/4.
Para crear la atmósfera y las texturas sonoras del tema, exploré el papel y los distintos sonidos que produce al romperlo, arrugarlo, ojearlo y manipularlo de diversas maneras, con el objetivo de que quien escuche se sienta inmerso en un mundo de imaginación y ensueño, incorporando elementos poco comunes dentro de la mayoría de las canciones.

‘Dreamscape’ was my first single released under the Reifier project. As its name suggests, the song is a journey into the world of dreams. The lyrics describe the narrator’s path as she walks beneath the sea, where the real world and the dream world gradually merge into one.
‘Dreamscape’ was born out of an improvisation, and the main lead of the song was created from a grand piano sample. After being processed through multiple effects, it developed a unique timbre. Because the improvisation was recorded without a metronome, it was difficult to define the song’s meter, as I didn’t want to lose its spontaneous and strange character; for that reason, I decided to count it in 11/4.
To create the atmosphere and sonic textures of the track, I experimented with paper and the different sounds it produces when torn, crumpled, flipped through, and manipulated in various ways. The goal was for the listener to feel immersed in a world of imagination and reverie by incorporating uncommon elements rarely found in most songs.
Sunder

Sunder es la canción más minimalista del álbum. Al irla construyendo, intenté añadir cada vez más sonidos, hasta que al final me di cuenta de que no necesitaba más: ya tenía lo necesario.
Al igual que “The Flame”, está inspirada en la ficción, o más bien en historias de terceros, sobre cómo a veces tenemos todo lo que siempre quisimos y aun así seguimos buscando, incluso si eso significa perder aquello a lo que ya habíamos llegado.
Este es el primer solo (aunque no muy convencional) que integré en una de las canciones. Surgió a partir de un bug: utilizo el instrumento Push 3, que es MPE, y al tocar un preset de un sintetizador virtual el sonido se comportaba como si se reiniciara constantemente. Entonces usé otro controlador para generar el efecto contrario, y así nació el solo de esta canción.

‘Sunder’ is the most minimalist track on the album. While building it, I kept trying to add more and more sounds, until I eventually realized that it didn’t need anything else—it already had what was necessary.
Like ‘The Flame’, it is inspired by fiction, or rather by other people’s stories, about how sometimes we have everything we’ve always wanted and still keep searching, even if that means losing what we had already reached.
This is the first solo (though not a very conventional one) that I incorporated into one of the songs. It emerged from a bug: I use the Push 3, which is MPE, and when playing a preset on a virtual synthesizer, the sound behaved as if it were constantly restarting. I then used another controller to generate the opposite effect, and that’s how the solo for this song was born.
