Single Review: Moms With Bangs – Do What’s Delicious

California’s Moms With Bangs make a great first impression with their debut single for Alternative Tentacles records, Do What’s Delicious. The record is a fascinating collision of brevity and intensity, blending indie rock sensibilities with a deliberately chaotic, almost mischievous energy. From the first note, it becomes clear that this band thrives on unpredictability, crafting songs that are as compelling as they are unorthodox. There is a confidence in their approach that suggests a band both self-assured and willing to push boundaries, unafraid of unconventional textures or unexpected turns.

The A-side, ‘Madhouse’, hits immediately with a burst of relentless momentum. Middle Eastern-influenced guitar riffs intertwine with jagged, impassioned vocals, creating a tension that is both unsettling and magnetic. Its sonic aggression recalls the raw edge of In Utero-era Nirvana, yet there is an added precision here, every chord, every word, feels intentional and purposeful. At under three minutes, ‘Madhouse’ is merciless in its efficiency. Brief, brutal, and undeniably striking. It is the kind of track that lingers in your mind long after it ends, a concentrated blast of energy that showcases the band’s ability to make a monumental impact in a very short span of time.

Flip the record, and ‘Regga’ offers a surprising counterbalance. It opens with pulsating synthesizers reminiscent of the 1980s, soothing the listener before the storm. Soon, the song erupts into a whirlwind of growling vocals, jagged metal riffs, and saxophone interjections that feel both alien and exhilarating. The layered instrumentation demonstrates a careful attention to dynamics and texture, as moments of tension build and release with deliberate pacing. Despite its longer runtime, ‘Regga’ never falters or becomes indulgent. Instead, it complements ‘Madhouse’ perfectly, forming a two-sided dialogue between controlled chaos and melodic experimentation.

What makes Do What’s Delicious remarkable is how confidently Moms With Bangs navigate these extremes. They combine raw aggression with subtle artistry, delivering music that is simultaneously visceral, cerebral, and playful. The record feels like a blueprint for a band unafraid to challenge conventions, yet deeply attuned to the mechanics of engaging songwriting. Every choice, from rhythm to vocal delivery, seems designed to draw the listener in, making the chaotic elements feel deliberate rather than random.

This single is an arresting statement. It showcases a band that knows how to provoke, delight, and captivate in equal measure. Moms With Bangs are not just making a claim on the scene, they are doing so with unmistakable style, verve, and a distinctively original voice. Do What’s Delicious is a rare record that feels immediate and timeless at the same time, hinting at the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for this formidable band.
