Bearded Theory Festival Preview Derbyshire (May 20-24, 2026)

Bearded Theory Festival will be celebrating their 18th edition this year and have a carefully created line up and mix of genres to delight their faithful fanbase. The list of bands including Pixies, CMAT,, Lambrini Girls, Neville Staple, Goldie, Peter Hook and the perennial favorites 3 Daft Monkeys to name but a few. It is one of the most varied line ups in the UK this year. There is something for everyone from Headliners to those playing the smaller stages/earlier slots available to choose from,

Bearded Theory started in 2007 as a group of friends gathered together to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It went so well the same group arranged one the following year using it to raise money for charity running it on a shoestring with the support of friends being asked to assist with running it. The line up included 3 Daft Monkeys and Hobo Jones and profits were donated to Oxfam. The line up has overcome challenges including inclement weather (Tornado Town in 2009), COVID., moving location a number of times and maintaining their independent status throughout. In 2017 to celebrate their 10th year they invited bands from the 2028 line up to celebrate.

The team behind Bearded Theory have tried to make every year better than the last and have been recognized for their efforts winning awards including Best Small Festival in 2013 and Best Line Up in 2025. They have even introduced a one day educational equivalent for children attending the festival meaning the kids can miss their regular schooling without getting into any trouble. The festival has retained it’s independence with many of the people involved have remaining part of the festival team. They formally partnered with DHP in 2022 to ensure that the festival continues to succeed with ambitious, gender balanced line ups and great bookings.

This year they will be opening on Wednesday May 20th providing 5 days of music and entertainment at Catton Park in Derbyshire. There are 8 stages/music areas which offer a wide variety of genres of music. For the best experience I would recommended finding some time to enjoy each one from the main stage (The Pallet) to Convoy Cabaret (for some of the more alternative performers) to Coda (dance music) and Big Ed (DJs and dancing).

Having only attended my first Bearded Theory last year I am very excited to return to Catton Park again in 2026 to review it for Joyzine. My only fear is the number of bands/artists I want to see seems to get longer every time they announce additions to the line up.

I’ve been digging deep into this year’s line up and would like to share some of the bands I’ve never seen but will try to this year and think will be amazing for your consideration. If you are coming and have suggestions I would love to hear them.

Au Pairs– A fiery post punk band recently reformed by Leslie Woods, without the other original members, but comprising new band members from other bands including Estella Adeyeri (Big Joanie), Jem Doulton (Thurston Moore Group) and Alex Ward. Never having had a chance to see them during their brief existence in 1980/81 I’m very excited to hear both their earlier songs and new ones being written by the current incarnation of the band.

Westside Cowboy – A four piece from Manchester playing their own take on Indie, country tinged, rock and roll. They have only been together since 2023 but have a steadily growing fanbase and feel like they are going to hit new deserved heights this year. The band sounds great on the singles and EPs they’ve released to date with So Much Country ‘Till We get there a tremendous set of songs that are made to be heard live. Future headliners.

Twilight Sad-A band that seemed to have largely passed me by to my shame, This Scottish band has been around since 2003 (with their debut album in 2007). The band are able to balance their dense, indie rock songs with lyrical intimacy and I understand they will be an incredible live band. Currently touring with two original members James Alexander Graham providing vocals and Andy MacFarlane playing guitar and accordion they will be releasing their latest album this month It’s the Long Goodbye

Skunk Anansie-Another band I’ve somehow managed to miss out on live. I’m really excited about getting a chance to correct this mistake this year.. Skunk Anansie have been around since 1994, broke up between 2001 and 2009 with their most recent release The Painful Truth in 2025 being as good as anything they had previously released. This band are passionate about what they believe in, angry at those who don’t share their values and not afraid to speak up about injustice within society. I can’t wait to experience the full volume intensity of this band live.

Listening to the bands on the line up has both reminded me of some bands that I loved when I was younger (some of whom I’ve seen and others I haven’t yet), introduced me to some others and have me counting down the days until it all kicks off. In a still very crowded field of festivals across the UK and in Europe Bearded Theory has been able to keep building upon their initial inspirations and created a community. Attendees have been spreading the word adding new converts to this idyllic gathering of like minded souls. If you haven’t got yourself a ticket yet you might want to do so.
