SINGLE REVIEW: Desperately Seeking Suki – Suki

‘Call Me Maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen has racked up 1.8 billion views on YouTube. That means that almost one in four people on the planet have watched it. As the kids say these days, it’s “quite popular.” Jepsen’s ‘Run Away With Me’ has been viewed a mere 55 million times, which is an injustice almost as galling as the Orange Psycho’s continued existence.

The beginning of ‘Suki’, the debut single by the coincidentally named Desperately Seeking Suki, bears an extremely pleasing resemblance to Jepsen’s relatively sidelined pop banger. The echoes are so familiar, you might half expect Jepsen to start breathlessly mapping out a lovers’ escape.

Desperately Seeking Suki are brother and sister duo Natassa Zoë and SIG SALI (Danny Pugh). Natassa says: “Suki is about embracing the light and dark in yourself and finding love that holds through the chaos.” The lyrics are even more poetic. Exhibit A: “Apricot sky as the sun wakes up.” Exhibit B: “Emerald eyes, pistachio jade.” The verses and pre-chorus are spoken, much in the manner of Wolf Alice’s sublime ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’. The chorus then bursts into being like a Batman spotlight replacing the moon.

‘Suki’ is the sort of moody electronic bliss you’ll want to smother your ears with as you weave your way through a Tokyo shopping centre, bemused and delighted by the endless lights and liminal spaces. This all bodes incredibly well for Desperately Seeking Suki’s EP, which is due to be released in the summer.
