VIDDY WELL: FEATURED VIDEOS FROM DEAP VALLY, NO TEETH, BLACK DECELERANT & GARLEN LO

Viddy Well is an occasional series that rolls up some of the best videos that have hit the Joyzine inbox recently. These are videos that avoid the trap of shaky live footage badly synced with the studio track (don’t do it indie bands, don’t do it) and offer something visually stimulating, gloriously disturbing or just fun, fun, fun. Just because you lack Hollywood budgets doesn’t mean you have to lack imagination as this selection shows. So, viddy well dear readers, viddy well.

DEAP VALLY – IT’S MY WORLD

The DV’s as a duo generate more power than your average power station. After ten years of balling, blazing, babies and extreme knitting they have called time on the band and are currently touring the world saying farewell to their legions of fans. ‘It’s My World’ is their swan-song and it’s a belter. They hit the UK at the beginning of June so catch them one last time if you can, you won’t be disappointed. Tickets (standard + VIP) here.

NO TEETH – A HORSE NAMED PANTY RAID

No Teeth hail from Newcastle On Tyne and say they are the “depraved brainchild of we, the washed-up reprobates, and a vile organism of torturous and insatiable nature” which reads like something between Shakespeare and the description of Mos Eisley space port. The video for ‘A Horse Named Panty Raid’ is like a garishly coloured Jan Svankmejer-like animation or Trumpton on acid. Watch if you dare. This track is taken from the forthcoming album Decadence In Breeding out on 21 June.

BLACK DECELERANT – FIVE

Having received an advance copy of Black Decelerant’s album Reflections Vol. 2 I have been utterly captivated by their jazz-tinted ambient music. ‘Five’ could easily be channelling five in the morning as it softly drifts around you. I have never found whale song restful (I always wonder what they’re actually saying to each other), but alternative medicine practitioners should be buying themselves a copy of Black Decelerant’s album when it comes out as it would increase their patient’s zen state exponentially. The video is lush and soporific as it sees band members Khari Lucas (aka Contour) and Omari Jazz communing with nature. All bliss, no miss.

GARLEN LO – SENTIMENTAL GUY

There is something very delightful about this video for Garlen Lo’s track as it tracks his life in photographs from age 0 to his current age of 41. It’s a collage of pictures from all aspects of his life as he grins his way through school, family events, holidays and even sitting next to Benedict Cumberbatch as an extra in a Doctor Strange film. The song is built on an earwormy xylophone riff, or is it glockenspiel (only scientists know the difference)? It bubbles along gently, never obtrusive, but every bit as warm and inviting as the video.
