The Joyzine Radio Show is due to return to the airwaves from Croydon Radio‘s new home ar Airport House next week, but for those who can’t wait here’s our selection of ten tracks of the week:
1) Phobophobes – No Flavour
We were saddened to hear of the death of Phobophobes guitarist George Russell earlier this year. The band are putting on a special celebration in his memory at their local venue Brixton Windmill on Saturday 10th September with seventeen bands performing including Meatraffle, Taman Shud and Phobophobes themselves. Tickets, priced at £5, are available here – all money raised will go towards the publication of a book of poems and lyrics written by George.

2) God Damn – Sing This
Birmingham two-piece God Damn release their second album Everything Ever on 23rd September and ‘Sing This’ is the latest single to be taken from the forthcoming LP. As heavy as it is addictive, it’s further evidence that God Damn have avoided ‘difficult second album syndrome’.

3) Urusei Yatsura – Kewpies Like Watermelon
Yes, I know that we included them in last week’s playlist and yes, I also wrote a fawning review of their retrospective sessions album You Are My Urusei Yatsura a couple of days back and indeed I am also aware that we’ve booked band member Graham Kemp as a guest on next week’s radio show, but I’m picking the tracks this week and I love them so there.

4) Heyrocco – Yeah!
Touted by The Raconteurs’ Brendan Benson, who produced their Waiting On Cool EP, as ‘The best band I’ve ever worked with,’ South Carolina trio Heyrocco have been turned out high class powerpop for a little while now and ‘Yeah!’, released last week on Vital Music, is another top notch effort.

5) The Raveonettes – A Good Fight
Danish duo The Raveonettes have this year embarked upon a project to write, record and publish a new track on the last Friday of every month. When finished, the collection will be released as what the band are calling an ‘anti-album’. You can subscribe to receive the ‘Rave Sound of the Month’ here.

6) Angel Olsen – Shut Up Kiss Me
With her third studio album My Woman released last week, Angel Olsen is due to head out on tour around the UK next month. If you need a reason to get off the couch and head for your local venue, check out the wonky retro pop vibes of ‘Shut Up Kiss Me’.

7) Dolls – Audrey
Following on from their performance at last weekend’s Loud Women festival, London duo Dolls hit the stage again tomorrow night at Nambucca where they’ll be joined on the bill by Lady Low, Curse of Lono and A Lifetime With Mercury.

8) Junkyard Choir – Oh Have Mercy
Also out and about tomorrow are blues-rock duo Junkyard Choir. They bring their raw sound to Brighton’s Green Door Store, along with sets by Crack Foxes, Honeyshake and Outlaw State.

9) Terry – Hot Heads
Fresh from releasing their debut album Melbourne indie quartet Terry play a show at Birthdays in Dalston on 12th September. ‘Hot Heads’ is the first we’ve heard from them and the Kim Gordon in Free Kitten-like vocals endeared us immediately. 10) Luxembourg – Luxembourg vs Great Britain
In the halcyon days of Joyzine’s formation, Luxembourg’s verbose indie pop sound featured regularly within our pages and on the stages of our infrequent gig nights. They split eight years ago leaving a pop noir shaped hole in our lives, but no longer for the band have announced their return with a gig at the ever wonderful Guided Missile night at The Islington on 15th October.
