Single Review: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – Social Candy

Look, you’ve already won with the band name. Releasing a half-decent single would be showing off, banging out something this magnificent is like… a pre-emptive victory lap, flashing your hairiest bits at all the other competitors as you do so.

What a cracking pop single. A bit of melody lifted from The Beatles’ ‘Baby You’re A Rich Man’, a bit of the heavier side of Super Furry Animals, harmony guitar solos, enthusiastic shouty bits, an unexpectedly Queens Of The Stone Age heavy middle eight-ish… this is The Very Good Stuff. It’s retro as fuck, but when it’s done with this much vim, pfft. Who’s complaining? Hmm? Well, stop them. And tell them to enjoy the silliness. Rock is at its best when it embraces the daft, and this is very, very daft. “Commencing mission for face control/some kind of upper would be optimal” indeed. Well done Psychedelic Porn Crumpets!
