Having recently signed to PRAH Recordings* Carmel Smickersgill has released ‘Greeting’ as the first taste of a forthcoming EP set for release in early 2022. Smickersgill has a background playing in indie bands and jazz combos but has more recently has been studying composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester as well as being mentored by Anna Meredith**
‘Greeting’ starts with a collage of treated vocals, distant drums and distorted cellos and this slow processional feel eventually morphs into a dance track fit for a dystopian nightclub. The effect of the track is unsettling with first half offering the ebb and flow of a queasy tide and the second a late-night dance on unsteady legs. It’s a great introduction to what I suspect is going to be an exciting and striking debut EP.

**Anna Meredith’s most recent work was the amazing ‘Bumps Per Minute: 18 Studies for Dodgems’, an interactive sound work/art project commissioned by Somerset House, which used actual bumper cars in their courtyard to trigger sounds and create music.
