New York City supergroup Wah Together release their debut single “Sayonara” today via Dedstrange Records (home to Joyzine faves A Place To Bury Strangers, Jealous, Data Animal and more) and we’re delighted to bring you a first chance to watch the video here on Joyzine today.
Band members Phil Mossman (ex-LCD Soundsystem), Vito Roccoforte (The Rapture) and Steve Schiltz (Longwave) met in 2019 at a “chance” jam session Mossman arranged in his DUMBO basement studio, before recruiting former go-go dancer, avant-garde percussionist and occasional Coney Island “mermaid” Jaiko Suzuki (Electroputas) on vocals to complete the line-up.
‘Sayonara’ is a heady mix of Japanese Yé Yé beats, psych guitar freakouts, motorik bass and skewed 60s-pop melodies that brings to mind Deerhoof smooching with Yeah Yeah Yeahs behind the bike sheds, as Suzuki’s vocal bids a fond farewell to the memories of a lost lover. The band are set to release an album, Let’s Wah Together, in March and this is the first music to be shared from that record.
The track is accompanied by an intimate live performance video, which the band explain “was shot by Dalia Ali, our Egyptian friend, a psychonaut film maker turned healer with Bobby Bunz’ sweet lights, from our first show at Union Pool in Brooklyn. Edited by Bill Moldt.“
Wah Together play a launch show for the single at Berlin’s Under A on Thursday 9th December, supported by Cool Whip and Aki Goto/Masami Tomihisa. Tickets are available here.
