Throughout the lockdowns of 2020 we teamed up with a group of likeminded blogs and promoters to present Balcony Festival – a series of online shows featuring a host of fantastic performers. Amongst those involved were London promoters Sonic Tonic, and we’re delighted to be partnering up again to bring you more fantastic new msuic, this time in person at our favourite East London venue Paper Dress Vintage.
The duo of shows, which we’ve niftily titled Two for 2022, kick off on 21st January with a line-up headed by dreamy genre-spanning sounds of Firestations, whose heady mixture of sounds melds shoegazey indie and intimate folksy warmth, through to addictive synth pop and harmony driven psychedelia. Their 2021 EP Pixel Wilderness (released via the ever-excellent Lost Map Records) led our Paul F Cook to exclaim “This is sensory stimulation that goes to 11.”
Joining them on the night will be The Leaf Library, whose sound has a hazy experimental edge, built on layers of chiming guitars, pulsing electronics, noise and looping drones, and French singer-songwriter Alizée Leriche, who has worked under different pseudonyms on the Parisian scene from 2015 to 2020. Her new project moulds classic 70s influenced song-craft, and subverts it with alluring diversions that are totally her own, with a theatrical idea of intimacy, taking influence from the natural world, human interaction and gothic nightmares.
And if that’s not enough to entice you to Hackney, tickets include free entry to the Certified Bangers club night, taking you into the wee hours of the morning with their selection of great music from across the musical spectrum.
Proof of Covid vaccination, recent infection or a negative lateral flow test is required to be shown on arrival at the venue via the NHS Covid app.
Sonic Tonic and Joyzine will be back at Paper Dress Vintage for the second half of Two for 2022 on 22nd February, with Shattercones, Maggie The Cat and Naomi In Blue. Find out more, including where to buy ticket here.
