‘Shadow In The Frame’ is the new single release from Daniel Rossen, one of the unmistakable voices of Grizzly Bear. It heralds the announcement of his first ever solo album You Belong There which is to be released in April. This is welcome news.
The song has something of the ragged troubadour about it, with Rossen’s voice shimmering in the song like a plaintive Tim Buckley. There’s a slight buzz from the guitar line, swelling upright bass notes some woodwind, cello and some perfectly intuitive drums played by Chris Bear, that sound like they were recorded in a large hall. There is also the feeling of shifting sands as the track moves from major to minor, mixing the melancholy with the mellifluous.
You might worry that unpicking Rossen from a band like Grizzly Bear would unravel the sound but far from it. With a move from Brooklyn, via upstate New York, to a new desert home in Santa Fe, Rossen has found freedom to explore the space between his darker past and a brighter future. It’s also hugely impressive that, apart from the drums, Rossen plays almost every instrument on this track (and the album to come) yet it doesn’t feel multi-tracked, It has a loose, live feel as if it’s a band playing in the studio and that’s not easy to achieve. Colour me fully excited for the album release.
Daniel Rossen’s album You Belong There is out April 8th via Warp Records and if you quick you can order the gold vinyl limited edition from Bandcamp and all good indie record stores.
