SINGLE REVIEW: THE WEB OF LIES – RECEIVER

‘Receiver’ is the new single from a brand-new band: The Web of Lies and it’s taken from their forthcoming album Nude With Demon. The band are Neil Robinson on drums and percussion and Edwin Stevens on vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards (I’m guessing he’s got a lot of arms). The single is a low-slung prowl, bristling with menace with bass notes that sound tuned down so they resonate slowly and create a queasy back drop that slides like lava around the relentless drums. The guitar scuds around, firing off riffs that shift and constantly change while staying rooted to some subterranean power source, tearing holes in the fabric of reality through which edgy vocal harmonies appear. The song crescendos to a granite-splitting peak and then collapses in on itself like a sink hole opening up in the universe. And breathe.

I asked Joe at the Wrong Speed Records to sum up The Web of Lies and the forthcoming album: “This album hits all the Comets on Fire / Sunburned Hand / VU / 60s frazzled rock buttons that we love the hell out of. Neil Robinson (Buffet Lunch) and Edwin Stevens (Irma Vep) have rounded up a strong team of characters from in and around both Leeds and Glasgow. They’ve created a world where the songs fade in, you feel like you’re stepping into a session, catching a moment, the songs fade out, you leave, in awe. It SOUNDS so good. We’ve pressed 283 copies on black vinyl. It’s out on the 25th February. You’re gonna want it. Cannot wait to see them live.

I have heard the album and it’s awesome, and I can’t wait to review it. Given the limited vinyl run do not hesitate to pre-order if you can as the label’s last release, The Mute Servants EP, sold out fast. Wrong Speed are showing themselves to be a record label that have a golden ear for talent and it’s definitely worth following them on Bandcamp to stay up to date with their releases.

The album Nude With Demon is released on 25 February and you can pre-order it from Wrong Speed Records Bandcamp page.
