The Wife Guys of Reddit new single is blistering pocket-sized punk track ‘Pig Fat’. The self-styled “purveyors of soupy rock” are Arion Xenos*, on lyrics, vocals, guitar, bass and Niamh MacPhail on lyrics, vocals, bass, violin, Elise Atkinson on drums and Angus Fernie on keyboards. The band say that the song poses two questions:
“1. What would happen if I decided to literally fight God?
2. What would happen if God turned out to be a little bit sexy?”
‘Pig Fat’ is a departure from the rumbling Americana of their previous EP release, Wet and Tired, and from the opening burst of fuzzed, naked guitar and a tight kit roll gives you just enough warning to put your seatbelt on and brace yourself. The song splashes and crashes around like a Roller derby grudge match with staccato vocals barked over the top but a couple of times during the song the angry clouds part just enough to let a sweeter chorus-not-chorus shine through.
Despite the sub-2-minute running time It’s so good that you need to put it on repeat to catch all the gritty goodness. Like wiping bread round your plate so you don’t miss any bit of a great meal. However, there is a second track ‘Bacon Grease’ which offers a light and dark lounge version of the song with dual vocals and a final wig-out section of full band mayhem. It’s safe to say that ‘Pig Fat’ is, in many senses of the word, a banger.
‘Pig Fat’ lyrics:
I’m under pressure
Where is my head at?
I’m under pressure
You’re in the pig fat
Oh my god
Oh my god
I’m gonna get Him
I’m under pressure
Where is my face at?
I’m under pressure
You’re on the carpet
I’m underwater
You’re in the ape trap
I’m Tierce de Picardie**
You’re cracking bitmap
Oh my god
Oh my god
*Arion Xenos is one of the few musicians I’ve Googled who had a LinkedIn page
**I had to look up the line “I’m Tierce de Picardie” and learned that it’s also known as a Picardy cadence which is a major chord of the tonic at the end of a musical section that is either modal or in a minor key.
