Land Trust is a charity album put together by Bikini Kill’s touring guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle and producer Vice Cooler. All profits from this album will benefit the Indigenous-led grassroots organization Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, which acquires farmland in order to return it to Indigenous nations and to reconnect POC farmers to land stewardship and control.
The album was created in the height of Covid, when the artists were all quarantined at home, wondering what they could do to be productive and helpful. They figured out how to do remote recording and then invited various guest artists to provide vocals and other instrumentation.
This is a gem of a curated benefit album, especially if you are fans of bands like Bikini Kill, The Slits, Sleater Kinney, The Raincoats and Sonic Youth. In fact, Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill is featured on track ‘Mirrorball’, The Raincoats have contributed instrumental ‘Agave’ and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth features on grungy song ‘Debt Collector’.
The album is filled with fantastic talented artists, some you may know and love, maybe others that might be unfamiliar to you. Unsurprisingly, from an album partly put together by a member of Bikini Kill, female voices are prominent, mostly in a punk vein, although there is also grunge, experimental and electronica also explored.
Stand out tracks for me are ‘Mirrorball’ featuring Kathleen Hanna, ‘Lost in Thoughts’ featuring The Linda Lindas & Kathi Wilcox and ‘Decoder Ring’ featuring Katie Alice Greer.
This is an amazing collaboration album with a dream line up of talented musicians coming together for a good cause. What’s not to like?
