‘Weirdo’ is the new single from Stockholm-based Girl Scout and it’s a bitter-sweet anthem for anyone who may think they don’t always fit in and may come off as a ‘weirdo’.
Singer and guitarist Emma Jansson explains: “Some days I wake up and I just forget how to be a person. I forget how to act and can’t for the life of me have a normal conversation. I wrote this song on one of those days. Feeling like you’re all rusty and not being able to relax and climb out of your shell and then worrying that you’re coming off weird but then you become even weirder because you’re simultaneously analysing if you’re being weird. Then you’re just like fuck it, maybe I’m weird but I’ll live.”
The track is softly undulating with a slow build in the verses and pre-chorus which has the feel of a long, slow intake of breath before the chorus appears as a glorious exhalation. This is a song that seems to invite you to block out your surroundings, shut your eyes, throw your arms out to the side and twirl until you’re sick with dizziness and ready to fall over, but all with a huge smile on your face.
The band are Emma Jansson (guitar, vocals), Evelina Arvidsson Eklind (bass, vocals), Per Lindberg (drums) and Viktor Spasov (guitar). They all met while studying jazz at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The video is directed by Kenny McCracken and alongside singer Emma Jansson also features actor Mark Williams, someone who will be familiar to fans of The Fast Show or Father Brown.
