SINGLE REVIEW: ISSEI HERR – PRELUDE & AUBADE

Brooklyn cellist and composer Issei Herr has announced the release of her album Distant Intervals with the double single ‘Prelude (An Eternity of Light)’ and ‘Aubade (The Farewell Is a Beginning)’.

Herr records multiple layers of overdubbed cello, like a sonic mille fois, and despite a rhythmic pizzicato pulse the majority of both tracks are made up of elongated notes which create a constantly shifting landscape where resonant lows and sweetly harmonic highs slide in and out of phase. Your ears cannot quite get purchase on any single tune or series of notes so it’s best to close your eyes and float along with the sheer beauty of it all.

I’m looking forward to reviewing the whole album when its released on 7th April but if you like what you hear you can pre-order Distant Intervals from Issei Herr’s Bandcamp page.
