SINGLE REVIEW: BLAB – HATE LOVE, MAKE LOVE

BLAB is Southend based multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Frances Murray and ‘Hate Love, Make Love’ their brand new single. BLAB say:

This song was super fun and quick to write and record for me. I think the whole thing only took about 2 days total. I have this Yamaha PS-20 from the 80’s that my friend sold to me, and it’s got so many wacky sounds on it. It has a built-in bass arp and as soon as I tried that out, I knew I was onto a finished song. I kind of wanted to write a song that felt like it could be on the Austin Powers soundtrack, a pastiche of the 60’s but with a Ramones-eque bite to it. Something silly and funny and not too serious.”

It clocks in a 2 minutes 8 seconds and even with this little time to play with the fuzzy guitar intro is 25 seconds long. Brave, and also brilliantly captivating as you are willing for something to happen. When the song does kick in it’s lo-fi and super-catchy with the vintage Yamaha PS-20 sounds ranging from a reedy organ to a spongy bass line. Part talk-sung with a dissonant chorus tune “being in love is really hard” which jumps out from behind the shout “HATE LOVE, MAKE LOVE”.

This is instant repeat-button catnip and it’s a Goldilocks track being neither too sweet nor too sour. ‘Hate Love, Make Love’ is a new-new wave cracker that deserves to be played loud and often.

HATE LOVE, MAKE LOVE Lyrics:

Flowers and chocolates and wishes and gifts it’s pointless shit
These are the things I know I’ll never miss
Scrolling and swiping and longing and lust love is the drug
It’s making a meal gonna eat up all of us

HATE LOVE MAKE LOVE
Being in love is really hard
HATE LOVE MAKE LOVE
Loving myself is really harder
