Single Review: Feral Five – Truth Is The New Gold (Martyn Ware Remix)

Electronica duo Feral Five have always been a band looking to push the boundaries of technology and music – their recent debut album, Truth Is The New Gold, released earlier this year through the ever-trusty Reckless Yes Records, featured an AI version of singer Kat Five created with Berlin technologists Birds On Mars – it’s equal parts electro-glam-punk record, art project and science experiment, and is well worth investigating. They launched it with a show featuring live algorithmic visuals created by artist Jonathon Hogg using ‘truths’ submitted by the audience.

For their latest single though, they’ve turned to more traditional electro methods, drafting in electronic music icon Martyn Ware (of Heaven 17 and The Human League) to remix the album’s title track. The remix crafts this already slinky piece into a lithe and sparkling disco floor filler, snaking from the speakers like a diamanté diamondback. Ware and his collaborator, the composer Charles Stooke, bring the original’s undulating bassline to the fore, Kat’s ice-cool vocal riding its waves, with whirrs and swirls of synth adding punctuation, while snatches of cash register percussion force home the track’s lyrical theme.

Anyone who’s yet to witness the audiovisual spectacle of their live show should be sure to make it along to The Amersham Arms on 26th October for the final leg of our 20th birthday tour, co-promoted by fellow vicennials Rocklands and God Is In The TV, where they will be joined by Fonda 500, Bugeye and Colossus (£5 advance tickets here).

The Martyn Ware Remix of Truth Is The New Gold is released on 18th October. Listen on all of the usual platforms here
