SINGLE REVIEW: COCO – MOODRINGS

‘Moodrings’ is Coco’s new single and the third to be taken from their forthcoming album simply entitled 2. The band are Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors), Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo), and Dan Molad (Lucius) who have the talent and confidence to mix and match what instruments they play as well as vocal duties.

The song is built on gently undulating electronics that ripple over the light-dub feel of the drums. It is a giddy half-dream of a track that’s beautifully held together by Friedman’s charmeuse voice, apart from those sections where Oliver Hill says the vocals were run through engineer Adrian Olsen’s modular synth rig to achieve a “chopped up ‘femme-bot’” sound. The swelling strings in the middle eight are also total treat.

The video is directed by Oliver Hill and features actors playing the band in the year 2060 and starring Kris Ann Russell as Maia Friedman, Frankie Ray as Oliver Hill, and Judd Pilot as Dan Molad.

‘Moodrings’ is taken from the album 2 which is released on 1 March.

LYRICS:
I’d like to try what you want me to
I find that nice
I like ‘em wise and unglued
All fun and kinda loose

I laugh when you want me to
I splash into your mood
I love sharing a room
Even when we’re arguing

I’d like to drive with you somewhere new
Countryside for life
Hide under pines or sky blue
Either way would be fine

I laugh when you want me to
I splash into your mood
I love sharing a room
Even when we’re arguing

Baby you and I
Baby we’ll be fine
With every day, comes another
