Album Review: Julie Christmas-Ridiculous and Full of Blood

Ridiculous and Full of Blood is the second album from American musician Julie Christmas. Christmas is actually Julie’s middle name, as she was born on Christmas Day. But if you have never come across her before, don’t be fooled by the name. There are no sleigh bells or jolly old men to be found here. In fact, I would probably say this album is pretty much the opposite.

This album is not a joyful, feel-good affair. This is the sound of feminine darkness and rage. If there were a modernized film made about the destructive side of the Hindu Goddess Kali, I imagine ‘Ridiculous and Full of Blood’ would make a fitting soundtrack.

The songs are cinematic, big, loud, and brash. Musically, Julie Christmas produces music that is reminiscent of Daisy Chainsaw but heavier. Julie has an incredible voice that is showcased to its full capacity on this album. From sweet but dark vocals to full-on heavy metal screaming, she truly has a wide range.

‘Ridiculous and Full of Blood’ is personal and emotive, exploring the dark side of the psyche among other topics. Julie said of the album, “I want people to hear the sad heroine, vile villains, dreamy characters at play, squalor, madness, longing, challenge, triumph, beauty, and love. This story is a little different; it isn’t all a fairy tale. It speaks to how human nature defies categorization. The kindest person commits immeasurable acts of cruelty; the monster loves their friend. We are all like that.”

Julie Christmas’s ability to convey deep emotional landscapes through her music is unparalleled. Her previous work, both solo and with bands like Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice, already hinted at her unique style, but ‘Ridiculous and Full of Blood’ takes it to a new level. The production on this album is also worth mentioning, as it perfectly captures the intensity and nuance of Julie’s performances.

In conclusion, ‘Ridiculous and Full of Blood’ is not just an album; it’s an experience. It’s a raw, unfiltered look into the darker aspects of the human condition, presented through powerful music and vocals. For those willing to dive into its depths, it offers a rewarding and cathartic journey. If you are a fan of music that challenges the norm and delves into the complexities of emotion, this album is a must-listen.
