VIDEO PREMIERE: KEYS – THERE’S NO I IN TEAMS

KEYS new single ‘There’s No I In Teams’ is catchier than a cold with an angular riff that makes me want to invent a jerky dance to go with it. There’s twitches and shakes a plenty with guitar and vocals cosying up together in the low-key chorus (no pun intended) and it packs a lot of right-angle indie funk into its 2’17” running time. Joyzine readers get to see the video first in this retro-space-age premiere.

The video mines copyright free clips to create a tapestry of images including Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, nuclear explosions, and white coated men twiddling the dials of space centre equipment. The band also float over an 80’s laser background playing in a TEAMS meeting. KEYS say the song is about “the need to recapture our humanity in the digital age. It highlights our need for the simple joy of face-to-face human interaction freed from the electronic walls that now surround us.

This sentiment is mirrored in the B-52’s vibe where you can imagine a pre-social media world, dancing until dawn in a tiny hip club, ‘Private Idaho’, ‘Whip It!’ by DEVO or Gang of Four’s ‘Cheeseburger’. Diolch KEYS for bringing us a track so spiky it could pop balloons and so fun and frenzied you want set up your own indie club and play it non-stop.

It’s released through the always amazing Welsh label Libertino (ACCÜ, Adwaith, YNYS, Sister Wives etc.).
