EP Review: Molly Vulpyne- Amortise

Molly Vulpyne is best known as the powerhouse guitarist and vocalist of the punk band ‘Vulpynes’ and has recently gained attention for her collaborations with artist Meryl Streek. Her latest release, a four-track EP entitled Amortise, marks Molly’s first solo venture, showcasing a side of her musicality that diverges from her previous band-driven projects.

While I’m not deeply familiar with her earlier work, Amortise left a lasting impression on me. Molly’s vocals are gritty, unpolished, and full of raw emotion, reminiscent of Courtney Love’s distinctive style. The tracks are infused with an energetic rock edge, catchy hooks, and lyrics that strike a chord. The EP’s thematic focus seems to revolve around mental health and the intense inner battles many people silently endure, making the songs both personal and widely relatable.

One standout track is “Dead in the Water,” with its hauntingly relatable lines: “I hate this version of me, who is this person I see, I thought that I was free, I am allergic to me.” These lyrics perfectly capture the struggle of self-acceptance and identity, feelings that most of us have experienced at one point or another. “Nothing Fills” explores the desperate search for something to fill an emotional void, with the piercing chorus: “Nothing fills the space inside of you, nothing wins the race inside of you.” On the other hand, “Romantic” delivers another set of sharp, relatable lyrics: “I stress, I reassess, I love this mess,” underscoring the chaotic beauty in life’s messiness.

The EP’s closing track, “Inertia Right Hand Man,” offers a change of pace. It’s a slower, more reflective piece, with an atmospheric, echoey quality that contrasts with the faster, edgier songs but still leaves an emotional mark.

In Amortise, Molly Vulpyne reveals a deeply introspective and emotionally raw side, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Whether you’re a long-time fan of her punk work or new to her sound, this EP is an evocative listen, resonating with anyone who has faced their inner demons.
