SINGLE REVIEW: ACCÜ – SPINNING THE APPLE

‘Spinning The Apple‘ is the new single release from Netherlands-born, Wales-based musician, producer and multidisciplinary artist Accü. It was born, like so much great music, out of an impromptu session in Cardiff’s Tŷ Drwg Studios. Accü says,

I loved the whole process, people coming and going, laying down whatever they fancied,” says Accü. “It felt so open and un-rigid, back to the action of play – where we often forget is where the magic happens. In this particular piece, I seemed to be channelling themes of the unexpected roles we find ourselves in within families and relationships. The apple may not fall far. The apple may fall very far. That unpredictability fascinated me – how we inherit or reject patterns without even realizing it.”

No celestial Google maps is needed to navigate this ride through this shimmering psychedelic and dreamlike world; it’s about the journey not the destination. As suggested in the title, the song is imbued with a rotational feel as if it has no beginning or end, spinning endlessly in a languid orbit. Soft electric piano and bass float with synth-strings and ice crystal guitar lines sparkle throughout, a broad canvas that allows Accü to paint gently swirling vocals over the top. Delicate topline melodies and spectral harmonies dazzle, and the song title appears via a soft hypnagogic call-and-response chorus. It’s weaves a spell you never want to be broken.
