Single Review- Stripes- Forever It Won’t Change

Stripes’ latest single, Forever, It Won’t Change, hits with the kind of energy that reminds me of early 2000s rock—think the swagger of The Strokes mixed with the raw intensity of Sleater-Kinney. It’s a danceable, cathartic track that feels tailor-made for those sweaty, sticky-floored upstairs rock clubs where the music moves you before you realize you’re dancing. The vibe is nostalgic yet fresh, capturing a blend of jangly riffs and gritty punk edge.

The song itself flirts with pop sensibilities while maintaining a punk-rooted aggression. The verses balance on a knife’s edge, with tightly wound guitars that threaten to unravel before exploding into a soaring, infectious chorus. Izzy MK’s vocals deliver an arresting mix of desperation and defiance as she belts, “I don’t want to fucking change.” It’s a sentiment many can relate to—raw, honest, and unapologetically direct.

Lyrically and sonically, the track embodies the yearning it represents, a theme highlighted by the single’s cover featuring Luna, a dog described by the band as “intensely emotional.” Drummer Dave Possehl draws a poignant comparison: “We yearn for love and security in the same way a dog yearns for a tennis ball.” It’s this emotional undercurrent that gives the track its heart, elevating it from a catchy indie-rock anthem to something deeply resonant.

Forever, It Won’t Change is Stripes’ third single this year, and it showcases a band fully hitting its stride. Their self-described “jangular” sound—melding angular punk riffs with jangly indie melodies—feels more refined yet no less explosive. Now based in Brooklyn, the band is gearing up for their second U.S. tour, bringing their high-energy live performances to a wider audience.

This track also serves as a testament to Stripes’ journey. Led by Izzy MK, whose early foray into music began with the riot grrrl scene in Tucson, the band has weathered lineup changes, relocations, and artistic evolution. With a backstory rooted in DIY ethics and raw performances, Stripes continues to refine their craft without losing their fiery essence. Their latest lineup, formed in New York, has injected new life into the project, delivering a sound that is both polished and emotionally charged.

For fans of bedroom punk, lo-fi garage rock, and post-punk indie, Forever, It Won’t Change is not just a track—it’s an experience. Whether you’re headbanging in your room or dancing in a packed club, it’s a song that demands movement, reflection, and a little bit of rebellion. Stripes has carved out a sound all their own, and if this single is any indication, they’re just getting started.
