Sister Ray, the musical moniker of songwriter Ella Coyes, returns with Believer, set for release on April 4, 2025. This album lives in the alt-country world, with strong folk undertones and stunningly poetic lyrics that anchor the entire experience.
Coyes places storytelling at the heart of their songwriting. The lyrics are deeply poetic, and the music is crafted to support and elevate the narrative, giving the album a rich folk and country character. While the focus is clearly on the story, the music itself is far from secondary—it’s beautifully arranged, with a careful mix and masterful instrumental placement that enhances every track.
The production is top-notch. Each song captures a delicate balance between melancholy and hope, wrapping emotional depth in a sound that feels both grounded and uplifting. It’s a refreshing listen—honest and emotionally resonant.
What’s particularly striking is how the album maintains a consistent voice, despite exploring a variety of textures and moods. It feels like walking down the main street of a small country town—cohesive and singular, yet filled with little surprises and points of interest along the way.
Standout tracks include Wings, which brings a subtle funkiness that lifts the album’s energy in a really satisfying way. Animal Thing stands out for its descending chorus, which is both unexpected and hauntingly beautiful. And Magic shifts the album’s pace wonderfully—its electric guitar textures manage to deepen the album’s folk roots rather than detract from them.
Believer is a quietly powerful album that rewards close listening, and Sister Ray continues to carve out a truly distinctive space in the alt-country and folk scene.
