Welcome to WARWICKSHIRE: Shakespeare’s County read the road signs on the Warwickshire border. The rinsing of The Bard is understandable. Where I am, next door in Worcestershire, Edward Elgar’s name has been used to sell houses, coach trips, and pilates classes. Maybe it’s time for Warwickshire County Council to update their signs? Spacemen 3 are contenders for a roadside homage, seeing as they’re from Rugby. Or how about dance music maestro Andrew J?
His new single ‘Follow Me’ contains the lyric “I will follow the road that you made for me.” A highways officer could be forgiven for thinking that the track is a tribute to the local authority’s often thankless work. But ‘Follow Me’ is no such thing. It is an ‘80s neon disco-inspired’ dancefloor filler. You can imagine Nile Rodgers hearing it in Studio 54 and making notes. In addition to hyper funky bass, it includes bright keyboard stabs, jubilant brass, and house piano. If Bruno Mars is planning to plunder his record collection for another lovingly made pastiche, he would do well to listen to ‘Follow Me’ with pen and notepad. Indeed, he could follow Andrew J.
Welcome to Warwickshire, home of literature and uptown funk.
‘Follow Me’ is out now on a multitude of platforms here.
