Single Review: Tiger Island- Find Out Who You Really Are (And Do It On Purpose)

Some time ago I reviewed an EP from a band I fell in love with immediately for ‘making my ears smile’- that band was Tiger Island. I was absolutely delighted when they reached out more recently to tell me they have their debut album coming out on June 19th and a new single out today- ‘Find Out Who You Are (And Do It On Purpose). Spoiler alert- it’s a bop.

The song is inspired by a Dolly Parton quote (the song’s title) about letting your freak flag fly. The band said: “We spend our lives conforming to social codes that aren’t always helpful and can even be harmful. Many of us will waste years chasing other people’s goals and standards, trying to squeeze ourselves into boxes that just don’t fit. This song wonders what happens when we put all of that in the bin and really let go. Who would we become?” So not only is this song a total bop, but it’s got an ethos behind it I can totally get behind, and wait- there’s more! It also has a super fun silly Mystery Gang Scooby Doo style video which sees the band visiting a haunted fairground.

Musically, the song is a mix of pop, rock, alternative which happens to be super catchy and infectious. Even without watching the music video, the song just sounds like a band having fun and I can’t think of anything more enjoyable than that to listen to. I found my ears smiling once again, but also my mouth turning into a wide grin. I’m so looking forward to what fun awaits on the debut album!

‘Find Out Who You Really Are (And Do It On Purpose)’ is out today and you can stream in all the usual places. Tiger Island’s debut album ‘Let’s Go Out’ is released on June 19th (just in time for my birthday a few days later hoorah)!
