SINGLE REVIEW: CHERRY SERAPH – SPLITTING THE SKY

Cherry Seraph is the recording name of electronic artist Sophie Russell; someone I have been following since 2023’s ‘Self Destruct’ which I described as a ‘prowl on the dark side of pop/electronica’. ‘splitting the sky’ is their new single

‘splitting the sky’ is a sumptuous wash of sounds held together by a lightly ticking drum pattern. The song his track treads lightly through the verses, and they act like a gentle hand on your arm guiding you to the beatific chorus which languidly repeats the line “Like she’s splitting the sky”. It reminded me of the gentle beauty of Björk’s album Vespertine.

This is a song that doesn’t get in its own way. Simplicity and beauty are hard to achieve in music as less capable musicians cannot help but overload a track. Cherry Seraph has shown restraint to create a piece of music that is perfectly in keeping with a seraph being a celestial being.

Lyrics:

She’s got that Byronic gaze
In her eye
Wearing linen cloth, opens her mouth
Like she’s

Splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s

There’s a vein by her temple
Bruised blue and purple
Throbbing under her right finger
Like she’s

Splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s

Like she’s
Splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky (oysters underneath her tongue)
Like she’s splitting the sky (talk to me)
Like she’s splitting the sky (talk to me)
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s splitting the sky
Like she’s
