Electroniq is a showcase of some of the best up-and-coming names in electronica. With a focus on live vocals and immersive visuals, the event puts female artists front and centre, highlighting the talent shaping the future of the scene. We caught up with Electroniq debutants Cabin Marid.
Cabin Madrid are a wife and husband electronic, duo creating evocative synth-pop. They marry chuggy beats with sexy pulse-driven sequences, soulful grooves and atmospheric electronics.
How did you get into making music?
We’ve been making music together for 18 years!! Starting with fun open mics in Manchester, before moving to London and forming funk & soul band Mama Moonshine. After years of weird venues, wonderful festivals and questionable decisions, Cabin Madrid was born last year when our drummer took a break to pop out some kids. We’ve been tinkering with this sound for years, so it’s pure joy to finally give it some beans
I’m hearing a little bit of RóisÃn Murphy in your music, is she one of your influences?
Oh my gosh YES I love her so much!! From Moloko to now, absolutely obsessed. I was lucky enough to go to one of her listening parties for album Hit Parade.
What does ‘Cabin Madrid’ mean?
Our first holiday together was a trip to Amsterdam when we were 19. On a student budget we booked the cheapest place we could, which was an hour out of town. It was a weird campsite, with lots of tiny little cabin’s which looked like garden sheds from IKEA, named Cabin Madrid and we were next to Cabin Ibiza. Inside were 2 single camp beds and a wonky chair, and every day we couldn’t wait to get into the city. One fateful trippy night, we missed the last train home and ended up lost and wandering through the identical looking suburbs of Amsterdam. Not a single soul was around and what didn’t help was for a moment, I thought I was Barbra Streisand…We eventually found our way home at 4am by following the train tracks, and we felt so relieved to see that stupid Cabin. When we built our tiny studio at the end of the garden, it felt like theperfect time to honour ‘Cabin Madrid’
Your first gig was an EMOM, how important is that scene to the underground?
We were blown away by EMOM and the community they have built. Everyone is so friendly, supportive and creative!! It honestly knocked our socks off finding EMOM and playing our stuff live for the first time!! It’s so important for electronic artists, of allshapes and sizes, to try out their music and meet like minded humans.
Which artist would you most love to support?
Other than the fabulous RóisÃn, Barry can’t swim, Hercules & Love Affair or Charlotte Day Wilson would be gorgeous!!
What can the audience expect at Electroniq?
Glittery Boots. Chuggy tunes. Sexy Beats!!!
