SINGLE REVIEW: MYTBE – GOOD ENOUGH
‘Good Enough’ is the new single from Phoebe May Taylor who records as MYTBE, and it’s an honest account of battling against low self-esteem and body dysmorphia. But this is far from a pity party, it feels like a clenched fist but not a fight; a quiet but determined mantra to slough off the negative and hold on tightly to the positive.
The song itself is built on a woozy rolling guitar line that runs through the song surrounded by washes of bass, keyboards and accents of ukulele and saxophone. Everything swirls around Taylor’s voice which is replete with emotion, and has a rare clarity tinged with a touch of grit and tremulous edges. The overall effect is like having someone’s intimate thoughts drifting to you through mist and it’s an intoxicating mix of method and message, with Taylor “railing angrily against the societal stereotypes that led to her body dysmorphia”, a “cathartic expression” that helped her reclaim her body as her own and “overcome any previous pressure she had felt to comply with specific and oppressive beauty standards”
I loved the delicate waltz of MYTBE’s previous release ‘Moody’ and with the understated power of the four tracks on 2021’s Spill Out EP MYTBE is slowly building an incredible catalogue of songs which I hope will be joined by an album in the not-to-distant future.
MYTBE has also directed a video ‘Good Enough’ which was filmed by Tom La Motte, edited by Dan Alani and produced by Alice Veitch with set design by Lauren Taylor.

‘Good Enough’ lyrics
Prescribe me something good a micro-dose of youth to feel new
I’m better, getter there, my teeth, my skin, my hair – still screwed
I could show you, prove it; I’m well always chasing fulfilment
daily doses of contempt
Am I good enough?
I’m almost full up now
it’s my bedtime, rest up to feel fine retrain my mind
‘body positive’; that’ll do the trick
I can’t forget to practise my lines faking is my favourite pastime
somebody to impress. I’ll change the way I dress
and squeeze, I won’t breathe (and never let go) I starve myself of sleep
I’m hot as hell but keep it cool
won’t let you in, won’t let it show just need to hear you say
I’m good enough
I’m almost full up now
it’s my bedtime, rest up to feel fine retrain my mind
‘body positive’;
that’ll do the trick
I can’t forget to practise my lines faking is my favourite
quit the habit, find a good one let the world know I’m having fun
picture perfect, every second tell myself I’m not even trying…
if I’m not good enough
am I just another
liar, a let down, a nice looking rebound to paint over your frown
I could try my best like it’s effortless
I can’t forget to practise my lines faking is my favourite
