The new single from Berlin’s Circolo Vizioso is ‘Walls’ a song written from the band’s anger at the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It’s taken from the forthcoming album Verrueckt released on 1 March which is an album borne out of what band leader Paul Geigerzaehler says was an expression of the “anger, frustration and disaffection against an unfair world and all the discomfort entwined with that and we wanted to do it with direct and bare lyrics, abrasive violin lines, fat distorted guitar solos, and big fuzzy riffs.”
The riff the track is propelled along on was as a result of Tony Scafidi having listened to a lot of blues but when you filter it through the band’s love of bands like US acts Fugazi and Sonic Youth and East German punks such as Dezerter, Sandow and Schleimkeim then you get the hailstorm distortion of ‘Walls’. The track has that great feel like it has its own time signature; speeding up and slowing down depending on their anger levels or the nervous urgency that bubbles to the surface. It sounds fresh and in the moment, in part due to it being written in a little over an hour.
