EP review: Irked- Self Titled

Irked, a garage punk band hailing from Tyne and Wear, formed in 2022 and have quickly made a name for themselves. Recently crowned as a BBC Introducing ‘Band to Watch’ for 2024, their raw energy and unapologetic lyrics are turning heads in the punk scene.

Today, they dropped their self-titled debut EP, a 13-minute whirlwind that assaults the senses in the best possible way. It’s fast, furious, and unflinchingly political, capturing the essence of what punk should be. From the first note to the last, Irked delivers a relentless barrage of sound that demands your attention.

Backstreets’, is a searing track that tackles the harrowing issue of male violence and intimidation. It’s a gritty, in-your-face anthem that doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities many face. The visceral lyrics and aggressive riffs perfectly encapsulate the anger and frustration surrounding this issue, making it a standout track.

‘Move’, on the other hand, shifts focus to the struggle of maintaining a work/life balance. In true punk fashion, it challenges societal norms and expectations with a rebellious spirit. The rapid-fire drumming and distorted guitars mirror the chaos and pressure of modern life, while the lyrics offer a defiant call to break free from the grind.

Each track on the EP showcases Irked’s ability to blend potent messages with high-octane music. The production is raw, maintaining the gritty authenticity that defines their sound. Despite the brevity of the EP, it packs a punch that leaves a lasting impression.

Irked’s debut EP is not just a collection of songs; it’s a statement. In just 13 minutes, they’ve managed to create a body of work that is thought-provoking, energizing, and incredibly relevant. If this is any indication of what’s to come, Irked is definitely a band to keep on your radar.
