Electroniq showcase: A conversation with The Last DJ

Electroniq is a showcase of some of the best up-and-coming names in electronica. With a focus on live vocals and immersive visuals, the event puts female artists front and centre, highlighting the talent shaping the future of the scene. We caught up with Electroniq debutant The Last DJ aka Nick Hayes

Nick Hayes, aka The Last DJ, is a 69-year-old techno artist from Wakefield, Yorkshire, who defies age and convention with his brutal, high-energy sound. Using the Elektron Syntakt, he creates dark, industrial techno live, pushing boundaries with raw beats, fierce basslines and no pre-recorded sets.

Where did the name come from for the last DJ

The name came from a book I planned to write about a world taken over by a supreme power that banned all DJs. You were the last remaining DJ, on the run from the authorities, playing illegal music and organising underground raves.

You just use the Syntakt drum Machine?

Yes only the Syntakt to create all the music for 1 hour plus live sets. All the music is created from scratch but I also enjoy destroying the machines patches to make new sounds and melodies

Do you provide tutorials or teach people how to play the Syntakt in your style?

Yes my youtube channel shows how I make my kicks and also how to start a track from scratch and I also show a method on making music and tracks without over complicating the process. Making music should not be complicated.

What’s your dream collaboration or festival slot?

I don’t have a dream collaboration as I think it takes away from what I do and also the collaborator. However if Jeff Mills asked me I would say yes.

What can the audience expect at Electroniq?

It will be a combination of brand new music and some of my hardest tracks. After I have played a venue I ask the audience which tracks they preferred. And I will include these tracks on the night . It will be an audience driven Night to remember.

Electroniq November 27th also features Leg Puppy 2.0, Holy Braille & Laurie Black
