Electroniq showcase: A conversation with Holy Braille

Electroniq is a showcase of some of the best up-and-coming names in electronica. With a focus on live vocals and immersive visuals, the event puts female artists front and centre, highlighting the talent shaping the future of the scene. We caught up with North East duo Holy Braille.

Holy Braille are a dark electronic duo from Sunderland, blending harshwave, computer punk and witch house. As a live outfit, you’ll be hard pushed to find a more intense experience.

How did you get into making music?

Steph: Its a form of expression for me, its always been there. As a child I was always in my own world. It’s never changed! Just now I get to show you all a glimpse of that through music and performance. The sound and the vision…

Elliot: I was restless and a friend had already given me a knockoff copy of Ableton. Basically, I just taught myself DIY style from scratch. I couldn’t play an instrument at the time and I loved electronic music so it just made sense. The rest is history.

Live you’re utterly possessed, hypnotic and terrifying. Have you always been like this?

Elliot: We both like to get stuck in and make it not just about the music. So yeah, we’ve always been fucking mental.

Steph: Yes! I call this therapy. Whatever personality decides to show itself, appears! I lose myself in the performance depending on how i’m feeling. It releases itself in sound and movement, usually tends to be a blur for me but it feels good.

You recently supported IAMX, how did that come about?

Steph: We supported IAMX on the UK faultlines 2 tour last year. Chris chose us himself. I have no idea how he found us? We just recieved an email asking us to play and we said yes, which then gave us the opportunity to play Infest this year.

Elliot: It was a lovely surprise. A pleasure to support and play with a fellow artist from the North East. We also got to do remix of his track DISCIPLE which, was class and a first for us. Definitely something we would like to do again.

Who wears the trousers when creating your art?

Elliot: Ive just found a 58″ waist trouser. We can wear them at the same time. Happy days.

Steph: We’re just 2 people doing our thing. Both equal in the madness of creating, bouncing off each other and filling in the gaps we individually do best. Trousers, what are they?

Which bands are you influenced by?

Elliot: What got me really inspired was the YouTuber JEXUS. He makes glitchy videos of himself making synth patches, integrated with random VHS footage.

Steph: Personally for me its everything ive ever listened to. I don’t think in my head, ‘Oh, I want to sound like them/that.’ I just start something and see how it goes, regardless of genre or style. Its all about how it makes me feel, let the demons be released!

Which artist would you most love to support?

Elliot: We wouldn’t necessarily want to support anyone, we want to be the main act!

Steph: I have no idea! Thats something else I dont think about.

You’ve played Electroniq in 2024, what can we except this time around?

Elliot: The same again…

Steph: Who knows… We’ll see what happens on the night! I do know it will be awesome, with a room full of eager beavers…

Electroniq November 27th also features The Last DJ, Leg Puppy 2.0, & Laurie Black
