The Joyzine Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Free Music Downloads! #13: The Fades + Silent Star

Yesterday we reached the halfway mark in this year’s Joyzine Advent Calendar with a Cruel Nature Records special featuring tracks from Distant Animals and Omnibael – get your free downloads here. Today we have another double helping of free downloads from an upcoming gig featuring a longstanding Joyzine favourite.

As always, the tracks are completely free to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the songs (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but if you’re enjoying the tunes we’d love you to make a donation to the wonderful charity Help Musicians, who offer health and welfare support to musicians at all stages of their lives.

Let’s see who’s bringing the Advent Calendar treats today…

This Friday sees the live return of West London soul punks The Fades, headlining a bill featuring a huge array of Joyzine favourites. Support comes from indie disco miscreants Subliminal Girls (who we interviewed last week), coldwave two-piece Silent Star and new band Dead Patrons who count members of Hot Sauce Pony and Les Futiles amongst their number. They’ll all be taking the stage at The Fighting Cocks in Kingston-Upon-Thames on 17th December, with tickets a bargain £5 (full details here) and today we’ve got free downloads from two bands from the line-up.

Headliners The Fades recently released new single ‘People In General (PIG)’, featuring Les ‘Fruitbat’ Carter (Carter USM / Abdoujaparov), which was premiered here on Joyzine. Today we have an exclusive mix of that track, focused on Les’ woozy spoken word contribution to the track, along with the original single version. The single is the first taste of a new album due for release next year and Friday’s gig will be the first live outing for this new material.

Also performing on the night, Silent Star, the London-based duo of Patrick Barrett and Andrew Bowker, are described as “exploring melody, melancholy and brutalism with steady dance beats that march hypnotically through sparkling electronic swirls while evoking the rhythm of concrete walls”.

They’ve provided their track ‘To Hell or Hackney (Too Late)’ for today’s Advent Calendar.
