THE JOYZINE ADVENT CALENDAR – 24 DAYS OF FREE FESTIVE DOWNLOADS: #14 LOUD WOMEN – I, Doris

It’s December, which round these parts means it’s time once again for The Joyzine Advent Calendar! This year we’re celebrating our 20th edition, so we’ve scoured the archives to mix in some calendar classics along with a few fresh festive cuts from our favourite artists.

As always every track on the calendar will be absolutely free to download, and we don’t force you to sign up for our mailing list (though you can if you want, here) or hand over all of your personal data. The calendar is our Christmas gift to the world (or at least the part of it that enjoys seasonal songs by obscure indie musicians), but if you’re also in the giving mood we’d love you to make a donation to our chosen cause, the excellent anti-racism charity HOPE not hate, which you can do here.

On with the free festive tunes!

LOUD WOMEN have been doing excellent work promoting female and non-binary musicians since 2015 through their website, live shows, festival and radio show, and we’ve enjoyed teaming up with them on a few occasions over the years, including for an advent calendar Christmas special which will be broadcast on their show on Louder Than War Radio later this week and will then be available on their Mixcloud page here.

Today they’ve provided an exclusive opportunity to hear mummycore kitchenpunx I, Doris‘ new single ‘Merry Menopause’ a day before it’s official release, you can download it below.

We caught up with Cassie Fox, founder of LOUD WOMEN and bass Doris in I, Doris to find out more.

What have you been up to this year?

We had a cracking ‘hot Doris summer’ – playing Bearded Theory, Rebellion and Brighton Pride festivals, as well as LOUD WOMEN Fest and the Joyzine birthday party of course! Our big release of the year was ‘HRT’ – a topic which is very pertinent for many of us Dorisses.

What have you got planned for 2024?

We’ve got a very exciting collaboration coming up with Dunstan Bruce (Chumbawamba/Interrobang), lots more gigs in the pipeline, and there’s rumours of a trip across the pond soon too …

Tell us about your track

Our drummer Charlotte (aka Doris) wrote this song and takes the lead vocal, so it’s a nice change up! It’s funny that Cassie wrote ‘HRT’ and Charlotte wrote this song exactly the same time – great Dorisses think alike right?! The ’second Spring’ is definitely preoccupying our minds, and when we perform these songs live we generally always get women coming up to us afterwards thanking us for talking about these topics. The video was the idea of Charlotte’s 11 year old daughter Skye, and stars her dolls!

This year Joyzine has been celebrating our 20th birthday – what were you up to in 2003?

Happy birthday Joyzine! In 2003 I (Cassie) was making bad relationship choices, publishing books, and generally being very boring. If you’d have told me back then I’d be releasing music with an awesome band in 2023 I’d have called you a dirty big fibber!

Any new year’s resolution?

To make more music and have more fun!
