THE JOYZINE ADVENT CALENDAR – 24 DAYS OF FREE FESTIVE DOWNLOADS: #18 PNKSLM Records – 7ebra

It’s December, which round these parts means it’s time once again for The Joyzine Advent Calendar! This year we’re celebrating our 20th edition, so we’ve scoured the archives to mix in some calendar classics along with a few fresh festive cuts from our favourite artists.

As always every track on the calendar will be absolutely free to download, and we don’t force you to sign up for our mailing list (though you can if you want, here) or hand over all of your personal data. The calendar is our Christmas gift to the world (or at least the part of it that enjoys seasonal songs by obscure indie musicians), but if you’re also in the giving mood we’d love you to make a donation to our chosen cause, the excellent anti-racism charity HOPE not hate, which you can do here.

On with the free festive tunes!

As Joyzine turned 20 this year one of our favourite record labels, Stockholm’s PNKSLM, turned 10. Writer Paul F Cook has been a fan of theirs since he heard the 2015 album Caballo Negro by Sudakistan. They have an outstanding catalogue of albums that range from garage, punk, big beat, psych, rap and EDM from artists such as Chemtrails, ShitKid, GHLOW, Luke Big Byrd, Hemi Hemingway, Bryson the Alien and the best masked rock’n’roll band in the world Black Mekon (Paul recently reviewed their new album NEAT!).

2023 has also been a great year for PNKSLM as they released Bird Hour, the debut album by 7ebra, twin sisters from Malmö, Sweden. They have filled 2023 with support slots with Arab Strap and Teleman, shows at The Great Escape, Rough Trade East, and PNKSLM’s own 10th Anniversary gig in Stockholm plus a session for Riley and Coe on 6Music.

As an early Christmas present to the Joyzine readers we have an exclusive remix of their single ‘I Have A Lot To Say’ put together by one of PNKSLM’s label bosses Luke Reilly as his Lucern Raze alter-ego (I can highly recommend his 2020 album International Breakdown). You can download the track below.

Paul caught up with 7ebra to find out more.

What have you been up to this year?

We released our debut album, Bird Hour, and we played a lot of shows all over the place this year, from Austin, Texas to almost all of the UK which was great. We somehow played in three churches, tried Greggs for the first time, made eye contact with Gavin DeGraw at the Austin airport.

What have you got planned for 2024?

Recording more, and hopefully releasing something some new material soon. And we want to try haggis!

Tell us about your track.

It’s a remix of our second single, ‘I Have a Lot to Say’. Basically just a lot faster. Luke from PNKSLM made it, so he could DJ at the PNKSLM birthday party, but then forgot to book himself to DJ at the party.

Any new year’s resolution?

Do a cover of ‘Since U Been Gone’ by Kelly Clarkson or the one by Rainbow.
