It’s December, which round these parts means it’s time once again for The Joyzine Advent Calendar! This year we’re celebrating our 20th edition, so we’ve scoured the archives to mix in some calendar classics along with a few fresh festive cuts from our favourite artists.
As always every track on the calendar will be absolutely free to download, and we don’t force you to sign up for our mailing list (though you can if you want, here) or hand over all of your personal data. The calendar is our Christmas gift to the world (or at least the part of it that enjoys seasonal songs by obscure indie musicians), but if you’re also in the giving mood we’d love you to make a donation to our chosen cause, the excellent anti-racism charity HOPE not hate, which you can do here.
On with the free festive tunes!
Today’s free advent calendar treat comes courtesy of garage punk cult heroes Damaged Goods Records, home to many a fine band including numerous incarnations of Medway DIY punk legend Billy Childish. They’ve provided a cheeky cover of The Sonics’ ‘Santa Claus’ featuring an spoken word intro by Father Christmas himself – you can download it below.
We caught up with Duncan from Damaged Goods to find out how 2023 has been treating them.
What have you been up to this year?
Been another busy one for Damaged Goods. Off the top of my head… New music from Cyanide Pills, The Courettes, The Rellies, Yumi, The William Loveday Intention and more. Plus, archive releases by The Lurkers, Thee Headcoats, Kyra. Need a lie down now!
What have you got planned for 2024?
New stuff due from The Courettes, The Galileo 7 early in the year. And more stuff in the pipeline for later too! Keep an eye on our socials to get details as they emerge!
Tell us about your track
This is taken from the MBE’s Christmas 1979 album. Always a festive favourite on the office Dansette!
This year Joyzine has been celebrating our 20th birthday – what were you up to in 2003?
Thee Headcoats had just split up, so we released the debut 7″ by Billy Childish’s then new band The Buff Medways. They had an album out on Graham Coxon’s Transcopic label that year too.
Any new year’s resolution?
No, we can never stick to them!
