It’s December, which round these parts means it’s time once again for The Joyzine Advent Calendar! This year we’re celebrating our 20th edition, so we’ve scoured the archives to mix in some calendar classics along with a few fresh festive cuts from our favourite artists.
As always every track on the calendar will be absolutely free to download, and we don’t force you to sign up for our mailing list (though you can if you want, here) or hand over all of your personal data. The calendar is our Christmas gift to the world (or at least the part of it that enjoys seasonal songs by obscure indie musicians), but if you’re also in the giving mood we’d love you to make a donation to our chosen cause, the excellent anti-racism charity HOPE not hate, which you can do here.
On with the free festive tunes!
So, we’ve reached the final day of the 20th edition of The Joyzine Advent Calendar, and what a corker it’s been. You can check the links below to download every single one of the tracks from this year’s edition, but we’ve got one more festive treat for you, and it comes from Joyzine editor Paul Maps and long-term Joyzine associate Stewart Muir.
They first crossed paths when Muir was recruited for the Joyzine Soccer Six football team by mutual friend (and Joyzine goalkeeper) Dexy and have since occasionally dabbled in making music together, including a cover of Half Man Half Biscuit’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is a Dukla Prague Away Kit‘ for a previous edition of this calendar.
This year, in the gaps between Muir performing with alt-folk band Peridromes, fronting Phytomers and occasionally hosting a music night at The Hill Station on Telegraph Hill, South East London, the duo found time to record another festive classic. And with this being the 20th edition of the Joyzine Advent Calendar, they decided to take on the song that has been covered by more bands for the calendar than any other – Low’s ‘Just Like Christmas’ – a tune which tops many a ‘best alternative Christmas songs’ list, and which has been undertaken by three other artists within these pages over the past two decades. You can download Maps & Muir’s version below and decide where it ranks amongst them.
