One half of long-term Joyzine faves Feral Five (no, that doesn’t make her 2.5 people, they’re a misleadingly named duo) and fresh from a storming set at this year’s CroCroLand festival, Kat Five recently unveiled her new single ‘Switch’. Today, we’re delighted to bring you a first chance to see the video.
Speaking of the track’s focus on mental health and the acts of self-love that can help to combat daily stresses, Kat explains “Switch is a big tune about anxiety and feeling small, switching things up and down, and exploring to find your anxiety antidote. It could be something mystical, or practical, maybe something in nature…” Formed of handclaps, stomping drums and synths that swirl and buzz around Kat’s shimmering vocal, this is the kind of self care that those less inclined towards listening to whalesong can definitely buy into.
Kat’s work has always had a strong visual element and ‘Switch’ is no different, featuring Kat in a number of guises and even managing to squeeze in a dance routine. “I wanted the video to match the exuberance of the track as well as convey depth and texture, along with a narrative journey,” She explains. “So the different feelings became different characters. From someone feeling constrained by life – feeling small and shoehorned into a cardboard box, to an upbeat very physical character, and also a mystical and magical one who is close to nature, who I called the rave sprite! Working together with up and coming director and cinematographer Finn Green we filmed these strands in one mighty session, then interwove them in a very visceral way.”
