We’re ten days in to this year’s free downloads bonanza and yesterday served up a double portion of great new music from long-term Joyzine faves The Indelicates and Dexy – you can still download them here. Today we have another pair of fantastic tracks, this time from across the Atlantic courtesy of two bands who took part in the online Balcony Festival events that we organised with a group of UK blogs and promoters, raising more than £6,000 for a variety of good causes – all of those shows can still be viewed online here.
As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.
The Burning Hell – I Want To Drink In A Bar
At the onset of the global pandemic, Candadian garage-folk band The Burning Hell found themselves stuck in Australia, on a now-cancelled tour, about as far from home as it was possible for them to be. We spoke with them about the experience, which you can read about here. Fortunately they made it back to Prince Edward Island in time to record a cosy fire-side session for our first Balcony Festival (watch here).
They also released a now sold-out lockdown-themed split 7″ single with B.A. Johnston through Love Thy Neighbour Records (on what was charmingly described as ‘snot coloured vinyl’), and we’re delighted to bring you The Burning Hell’s contribution to the release – a lament for the loss of the world’s drinking dens throughout the lockdown.
And if that’s not quite enough to scratch your Burning Hell itch, you may be interested to check out frontman Mathias Kom’s new collections of songs dedicated to holidays of all shapes and sizes Holy Hullabaloo, which includes odes to Hanukkah, Diwali, Black Friday and the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It’s available at a price of your choosing via Bandcamp.
Velvet Starlings – It’s Christmas Time Again
Today’s second offering is a festive number from L.A. based Velvet Starlings .
Following the release of their much loved single, ‘Karmic Lemonade’, out earlier this year and performing online shows and festivals including our very own Balcony (watch here) and many others from L.A. to London, lead singer Christian Gisborne, has been busy collaborating with a new band and recording a whole host of new tracks, working towards their debut album release for Autumn 2021.
Lined-up to play SXSW and Summerfest 2021, Velvet Starlings aren’t phased, still recording a whole host of new tracks and jumping on all the virtual online line-ups that they can. Already working quietly behind the scenes, they are working out the logistics and busy booking dates for the Alt. Escape in 2021 and for their up and coming U.K. tour dates in cities from London, Liverpool and Manchester.
