The Joyzine Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Free Music Downloads! #21: LOUD WOMEN ft. I AM HER, Sulk 93 + I, Doris

Today’s Advent Calendar treat comes from another of the fantastic blogs & promoters who we teamed up with for the online Balcony Festival events that raised thousands of pounds for good causes. They’ve been back on the live scene with their own festival and released a fantastic charity single this year. They’ve provided us with four tracks for today’s calendar.

As always, the tracks are completely free to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the songs (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but if you’re enjoying the tunes we’d love you to make a donation to the wonderful charity Women’s Aid.

Let’s find out who’s bringing the tunes…

DIY collective LOUD WOMEN have continued their outstanding work championing women in music through their blog, gigs and the return of LOUD WOMEN FEST. This year’s festival, their fifth, was at Venue 229 in London and featured an array of fantastic bands and artists including Piney Gir, Breakup Haircut, Deux Furieuses and many more that we’ve featured in these pages. Applications for bands to perform at the 2022 edition of the festival are now open – click here to find out how to apply.

We’ll hand over to LOUD WOMEN’s Cassie Fox to introduce today’s Advent Calendar downloads.

Released this summer for Women’s Aid – a song of solidarity in the face of increased male violence against women on the streets, and behind closed doors. The song brought together 64 vocalists from the LOUD WOMEN network, the credits reading like a Who’s Who of the feminist DIY scene. Find out more about the song, and make a Christmas donation to Women’s Aid here.

I Am HER – Heretic
This track is the struggle of dealing with a person that makes you feel bad about yourself when you are pretty good at doing that anyway and all you did was love them. It is the fight back to self love and self worth and the casting aside of things that bring you down. ‘Heretic’ should have been released as a single but never was (though it’s on the album Herstory).

Sulk 93 – The Eyes In The Wall (written, recorded and performed by She17music‘s Kimmi Watson)
Exploring the stuff of nightmares and paranoid hallucinations, the song is inspired by The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story by Catherine Perkins Gillman. It was originally released digitally on the Pants on Fire EP, in December 2020.

I, Doris – In The Ladies
Ever been on a big night out and ended up spending an hour in the loo – making a whole bunch of new friends? This song is dedicated to all those lovely drunk girls in bathrooms we’ve met/been over the years! This is the lead single from our new mini-album – I, Doris – which is out now on Bandcamp (read their track by track guide to the album here).
