The Joyzine Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Free Music Downloads! #22: Rocklands ft. Jean Genie’s Massive Hugs + Elephants & Castles

Yesterday’s Advent Calendar brought four tunes from our friends at LOUD WOMEN, including tracks from I Am HER, Sulk 93 and I, Doris. LW were one of the blogs and promoters involved with our lovely Balcony Online festival shows last year, and today’s we’ve got a pair of songs courtesy of another of the Balcony gang.

As always, the tracks are completely free to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the songs (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but if you’re enjoying the tunes we’d love you to make a donation to the wonderful charity Help Musicians, who offer health and welfare support to musicians at all stages of their lives.

Let’s find out who’s bringing the tunes…

If I sat down and drew a diagram, I could probably trace 90% of the bands, musicians, labels, promoters, bloggers and other assorted musical folk that I know back to Rocklands and their Music Tourist Board meet ups in New Cross in the early 2000s. Since then Caffy St Luce and co. have taken on many guises, including Artful Fest, Artbeat Promo and the fabulous online publication The Zine UK. Today we have tracks from two bands that have shared plenty of Joy with the Rocklands crew.

Jean Genie’s Massive Hugs – Oh Bondage! Up Yours! (live at The New Cross Inn)

Whenever a Rocklands event takes place you can pretty much guarantee that the wonderful Jean Genie will be in attendance, whether onstage, in the DJ booth or dancing in the front row, dishing out huge smiles and massive hugs.

Earlier this year she performed at a special event as a guest vocalist with a group of our musical friends in New Cross to belt out an astonishing rendition of X-Ray Spex punk classic ‘Oh Bondage! Up Yours!’, and today we have the live audio for today’s Advent Calendar treat.

Elephants and Castles – Without You

Another of the countless Joyzine favourites that have also crossed paths with Rocklands over the years are South London indie-folk duo Elephants and Castles. They’ve provided a second helping of downloadable delights for today’s window with their track ‘Without You’.

Chris from the band explains, “We released it last year in reaction to the times and in pure wonderment of what will all the out of work pantomime horses do thanks to our sh*t government’s decisions. The song has legs and has actually inspired us to write an entire show off the back of it… more about that in 2022 along with some new releases from us.

Check out the video featuring one of the aforementioned panto-equines, and download the track below.
