Yesterday’s Advent Calendar treat came in the form of Hot Sauce Pony’s Goop-bashing thriller ‘Gwyneth’ – you can still download it here. Today we’ve a plethora of pressies for you courtesy of the many projects of one of the most prolific artists we know.
As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.

Musician, script-writer and occasional Joyzine contributor Peter Richard Adams is a man who likes to keep himself busy. Alongside the four bands he’s involved with who’ve submitted tracks for today’s calendar, he’s also reformed some of his previous projects (most recently Slimfit), written a chart-topping sci-fi sitcom podcast (Pod to Pluto) and somehow found time to put together a countdown of Christmas albums for us (you can read the latest installment here). Quite how he manages to fit it all we’ve no idea – he’s even written a guide to each of today’s Advent Calendar tracks for you, so I’m going to put my feet up and let him talk you through today’s batch of tunes. Over to you Pete…
Like most folks who do any sort of music, this year kind of took a bit of a nosedive in terms of plans. But, from the ashes of plans come… well, other plans. So while it meant I didn’t get to do any of the shows I’d been looking forward to, I did get to do a fair bit of record making. Here’s some of my favourite bits…
HEY YOU GUYS! – Brutal Holiday
HEY YOU GUYS! had intended to go on some tours this year but yeah… so instead we set about crowdsourcing backing vocals from anyone who didn’t have anything better to do to complete songs from our upcoming ‘ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS EP’. Everyone from CJ Wildheart and Les ‘Fruitbat’ Carter to Joyzine King Paul himself got involved and we managed to put out two new singles, ‘Wolf’ and ‘Brutal Holiday’. As part of the Brutal Holiday fun we instigated a campaign to find ‘lost’ Carry On Abroad star, Gail Grainger. Spoilerz – it turns out she isn’t lost. She just doesn’t want to be found.

Peter With Rosie – Bringing in the Greens
For the last two years my wife Rosie and I have made Christmas records. We initially started doing this instead of going on honeymoon (which is a perfectly legitimate thing to do), but now it’s become an annual habit we can’t seem to shake. During the summer we also released our first non-festive record ‘The Seasons EP’ which has at least one wintery song on it. ‘Bringing in the Greens’ is from this year’s festive offering ‘Advent’.

And What Will Be Left Of Them? (AWWBLOT) – D.I.Y. Not D.I.E.
AWWBLOT was a band I played in throughout the noughties and we had big plans for 2020. Shows were booked, new songs written and we were just about to go into the studio when lockdown hit. We’re hoping we can still get back together soon, but until then we thought it might be fun to put out a bootleg from our 2007 heyday – ‘Live at PopArt’. I like to think that it showcases the band at our best, which is also our ramshackle worst.

Peter Richard Adams – It Felt Like Christmas To Me
I’ve also done my best to keep busy on the solo front, releasing my sophomore mini-album ‘OJEP’ and a second song for Halloween, which I like to think is Christmas in October. ‘It Felt Like Christmas To Me’ is from the ‘OJEP’ album and features lyrics by Phoenix Phil Morley. I’m considering one day putting together my solo Christmas Advent Calendar offerings onto a record called ‘Joyzine To The World’ or something… but there’s a fair few years to go before that can happen.
