Yesterday’s Advent Calendar treats came in the form of a brand new Christmas tune from PET wife and an exclusive new recording from Useless Cities. Today we’ve a pair of tracks from some returning friends.
As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.
The May x Vienna Ditto – All The Pretty Horses
There are few bands over the years that we’ve loved as much as Vienna Ditto, and were heartbroken when they announced they were to split a couple of years back (read Paul Maps’ review of their final gig here). Imagine our delight then when news of a reformation began to seep out online – we immediately signed them up to perform at our 2019 Christmas show, which was then cancelled due to an unexpected temporary venue closure. No matter though, we had a rescheduled date for April – what could possibly go wrong?
Whether that show will ever happen, only time will tell, but in the meantime Vienna Ditto’s Nigel Firth has been creating new electronic sounds as The May, releasing an EP and single via Bandcamp earlier this year and we’ve got the perfect amalgamation of the two projects, with The May’s wonderful remix of Vienna Ditto’s beautiful ‘All The Pretty Horses’.
Elephants & Castles – Outdoor Kids
Another long-term Joyzine favourite that we hadn’t heard from in a while, Elephants & Castles took a break when one half of the duo away moved from their South London base, so we were thrilled when they got in touch to announce that “following a brief hiatus to grow families, earn a living etc we’ll be back with more gigs when it’s safe to do so, meanwhile we’re writing new tunes,” and to let us know about their Christmas single ‘Without You’, which was released earlier this month, the video for which features a down-on-his-luck pantomime horse called Colin.
They’ve provided us with another track, the never more nostalgic ‘Outddor Kids’ for today’s calendar.
